Welcome to Potted Green Things!
Monsteras, Monsteras, Monsteras
There are 67 accepted and named varieties of Monstera. The most popular being the Deliciosa, with its large fenestrated leaves. These beauties are native to South Africa. The can grow quite large and are relatively easy to care for.
Water Requirements
Water a Monstera every 1-2 weeks, or when the top 2-3 inches of soil feel dry to the touch, rather than following a strict schedule, to prevent overwatering. Ensure the pot has drainage holes and the soil is well-draining to avoid soggy conditions, which the plant dislikes. Adjust watering frequency based on factors like light, temperature, and humidity, watering more in warmer months and less in winter.
How to Check Soil Moisture
Finger Test: Stick your finger about 2-3 inches into the soil. If it feels dry, it's time to water.
Chopstick/Dowel Method: Insert a chopstick or wooden dowel into the soil. If it comes out clean and dry, the soil is dry enough to water.
Moisture Meter: Use a moisture meter to check the moisture level in the soil.
Watering Technique
Thorough Soaking: When you water, water thoroughly until the soil is evenly saturated.
Let it Dry Out: Allow the soil to dry out a bit between waterings to prevent root rot.
Factors Influencing Watering Frequency
Signs of Overwatering Yellowing leaves, Drooping or wilting leaves, Crispy or brown spots on leaves, and Mold on the surface of the soil.
Lighting Requirements
Monsteras thrive in bright, indirect light, ideally 12-14 hours a day, similar to their natural rainforest environment where they grow under tree canopies. To achieve this, place the plant a few feet from a west or east-facing window or use a grow light. Avoid direct sunlight, as it can burn the leaves. Signs of insufficient light include small or non-splitting leaves, yellowing foliage, slow growth, and soil that stays damp too long.
Achieving Bright, Indirect Light
Place your Monstera near a window that offers plenty of brightness but doesn't allow the sun's direct rays to hit the leaves. East or west-facing windows are often suitable.
If natural light is insufficient, supplement with a grow light to provide the 12-14 hours of bright, filtered light the plant needs.
A few feet from a window can provide enough light without scorching the plant.
Signs Your Monstera Needs More Light
- Lack of fenestrations:
New leaves don't develop the characteristic splits or holes, which are a sign of maturity and strong light exposure.
- Small leaves:
New leaves are significantly smaller than older ones, indicating the plant lacks the energy for large growth.
- Yellowing leaves:
The plant may start to conserve energy by turning its leaves yellow.
- Slow growth:
A Monstera that grows less than 12 inches per year might need more light to fuel its growth.
- Damp soil:
If the soil stays wet for extended periods between waterings, even with good drainage, it could mean the plant needs more light to help it dry out.
What to Avoid
- Direct sunlight: Intense, direct sun can easily scorch and burn the leaves of a Monstera.
- Extremely low light: While Monsteras can tolerate some shade, extremely low light conditions will lead to poor growth.
